I’m always looking to continue working on my CPD as so more and more, I began eyeing up the possibility of finding the time to get my degree. Having worked in digital marketing for years, I assumed job hunting for clients, even on a part time basis would be easy.
Unfortunately as COVID 19, with more companies rushing online, they wanted guaranteed results and biasedly believe the only way to measure success is with at least degree level education. This may work in traditional marketing but in digital marketing, experience is king.
There are almost no Digital Marketing degrees. They are slowly emerging, but we are years away from enough specialists willing to teach the modules of a new degree when instead they can be earning. Traditional Marketing degrees only have 1 basic module covering digital marketing which will cover the basic theory but not teach the practical application of those theories.
Yet all around I see advertised entry level jobs requiring a degree in a ‘related’ field. How can an English degree teach you the principles of marketing required? Graduate jobs are not entry level. How can anyone claim to be a specialist as a recent graduate with maybe one module of digital marketing under their belt?
Even at the other end of the spectrum, its getting unrealistic. Below is an advert for a social media executive as part of the government Kick Start Scheme. This advert is aimed at 18-24s on Universal credit, yet the advert is recruiting a ‘tech-savvy professional with an interest in communicating through online channels’. When I was an 18 year old on job seekers allowance, I was none of those things.
In a still most unregulated sector where more advanced formal skills are not yet certified, only proven results will highlight the specialists of the field & specialists but nature specialise in only one area of digital marketing.
