Goodbye to the 9-5 office

When people ask about my career in digital marketing, the most frequent question is always why. What drew me towards digital marketing? The answer is unsurprising if you know me. FLEXIBILITY.

My husband is the breadwinner of our household and I’m a mother to 3 children of school age. I spent a decade trying to juggle my own strong work ethic around my husbands job and my children’s needs. If my children were sick, it was me who took the time off. Me who felt like a failure all the times I failed to juggle my responsibilities to an employer. I was always jealous of my husband who actually liked his job. His learning had allowed him to follow his passions while I floundered. I knew I needed to totally change what I was doing. I have always worked in customer facing roles. Supermarkets, pubs, even telesales. Endlessly changing shift patterns. The grind was relentless and getting harder to manage.

Working in digital marketing offers amazing freedom. Not just in terms of time management but the huge creativity offered. Digital marketing is a huge umbrella of work. I can now manage my time much more effectively. With no 9-5 office constraints, the digital world is 24/7. To some this can seem daunting as you may feel more pressure to respond in real time to some marketing channels like social media work. I find this pressure offset by the freedom given to see opportunities in real time and respond quickly to emerging news and trends. Scheduling tools can take care of the bulk of upload work giving me more time create engaging content in its various forms. Website work, SEO and email marketing can all offer more structured work if that is a preference in your style but I tend to work more in social media creation and management exactly because of its amazing versatility.

I love being able to work on the go. If inspiration hits when I’m out, my phone alone holds all the tools necessary to capture the idea and begin developing it. I have been guilty of bringing my work with me on holiday, but when your job is a passion project itself, it can admittedly be hard to step away. Like all job sectors, digital has undergone some changes as it grows and the digital landscape is definitely ever changing on a frequent basis. New platforms and influencer marketing are still now affecting how traditional marketing is conveyed into a digital space.

Its important when choosing a digital marketer to find someone experienced in where you may need help.
