As a digital marketer, I often scroll through social media platforms wincing. I see posts doomed to fail for various reasons and I feel for the person who posted it. To succeed online, its SO important that the content you post is engaging. I see people reposting the same message, the same way and I can see the engagement dwindling. I’m feeling philanthropic today so today only, here are some free pointers to help you elevate posting.
The first tip may seem obvious but I still the same mistake being made. IMAGES. Adding images to your posts can boost engagement by up to 30%. (Videos have even higher engagement) Your posts should be stopping users from scrolling past your message and an image is the quickest, easiest way to achieve this. Where possible, avoid generic stock photos. This is a chance to showcase your business. It could be formal advertising image like a logo or menu, or even a behind the scenes peek to endear the brand to the audience such as a restaurant kitchen in full service swing. Let potential customers SEE what you do!
Be platform specific in your marketing! No one wants to see the same message everywhere. It can look amateurish and rushed to cross post to all platforms. Large successful companies with marketing departments and budgets wont be cross posting and these are the accounts you will want to emulate for success. Remember that users use differing platforms for differing reasons and so your marketing on these platforms should should be different too. Tagging a business on one platform doesn’t tag the businesses when cross posting. It doesn’t take long to copy and paste the message to a new platform and re-tag the business so they can endorse you on multiple platforms. A beautiful Instagram image wont show on your Twitter profile but instead will only show a link away from the platform. Online business collaborations are more popular than ever so why limit the ability to reach new audiences on new platforms?
Lastly, remember that Digital Marketing is more than social media! Respectable and established businesses will have a website. This means SEO may be needed to keep it on search engine landing pages. You may also need to look out for 3rd party sites such as My Google Business Listing. These can be used for review mining as well as for digital marketing analytics which can be better used to define your audience or measure online and offline activity such as calls to the business and requests to your location.
